Getting to know PCB manufacturers

Release Date:2015-07-19

What is a circuit board? What is a circuit board factory? And what does a circuit board factory do?

The circuit board is known as a printed circuit board, also referred to as a PCB (Printed Circuit Board) or simply a printed wiring board. It’s an essential electronic component, serving as the structural foundation for electronic elements and providing the necessary pathways for electrical connections among them.

A PCB factory is a manufacturer or enterprise that produces or processes printed circuit boards, operating as a production and processing company that customizes products based on customer orders and designs.

The PCB factory produces circuit boards by first creating film masks for manufacturing, based on the design files provided by the customer (typically PCB or GBR files). These film masks are then used to transfer the circuit patterns onto copper-clad laminates through processes like graphic development. Excess copper foil is subsequently removed via etching, leaving only the copper traces that precisely match the customer’s design. Next, holes are drilled in specific areas according to the file layout, preparing the board for component placement. Finally, solder mask ink—commonly green, though black or white is often used for LED products—is applied to non-solderable regions, followed by additional steps such as shaping and surface finishing to deliver the finished printed circuit board tailored to the customer’s specifications.

Depending on their production equipment, PCB factories have varying levels of processing capacity. Typically, when dealing with circuit board designs that demand higher precision, factories require equipment capable of delivering exacting accuracy. PCB manufacturers provide customers with both process capabilities—referring to the equipment's specific machining abilities—and throughput capacities, which represent their standard production output. If a product exceeds the factory’s regular production capacity and requires additional processing, the PCB manufacturer will first conduct a thorough evaluation and strengthen internal inspection procedures at critical stages to minimize defect rates and reduce waste.
