"FR-4, a widely used copper-clad laminate substrate in the electronics industry, gets its name from 'FR,' which stands for 'Flame Retardant' in English. The number '4' specifically refers to the material's classification under the UL94 vertical burn test, where it achieves the V-0 flame-retardant rating. At the heart of this glass-fiber-reinforced epoxy laminate lies its unique ability: when exposed to an open flame, the resin matrix automatically extinguishes within 10 seconds after the flame is removed. Moreover, any molten droplets that may fall during combustion are designed not to ignite the underlying cotton wool. To meet these stringent requirements, the material must withstand two separate 10-second burn tests without exceeding a total burning time of 50 seconds—and crucially, without sustaining continuous burning for more than 30 seconds. FR-4 laminates are crafted by combining E-glass fiber cloth with brominated epoxy resin, resulting in a product that retains excellent mechanical processing capabilities while leveraging the chemical properties of bromine-based flame retardants to form a protective carbonized layer. This layer effectively blocks the transfer of oxygen and heat, making FR-4 the ideal substrate for manufacturing printed circuit boards (PCBs). Particularly in electronic devices that must comply with international safety standards, FR-4 ensures that even in extreme scenarios, fire will not spread—providing a reliable safety safeguard for critical electronic equipment."
